HIKING & BIKING
Rome and the surrounding are offers visitors many trails and beautiful views.
D.R.A.F.T (Discover Rome Area Family Trails) is excited to announce the completion of the first 2.79 miles of the Town of Rome’s new bike/pedestrian trail. The trail weaves through the Alpine Village Business Park and there is already plans to expand the trails throughout Rome.
CHESTER SCHOOL FOREST
The Chester School Forest is a result of a cooperative effort between the Nekoosa School District and the Town of Rome. School district representatives, students and teachers, UWSP LEAF Coordinators, DNR Representatives, Town Officials and staff have been working since March of 2015 to restore the school forest located on Alpine Dr. Plans for the 40 acre parcel include a shelter building, extensive trail system, flora and fauna markers and an outdoor “Theatre” for naturalist programs and entertainment. VAN KUREN TRAIL
3.2 miles of new hiking and skiing trials adjacent to the Petenwell Flowage. The route travels through a variety of different habitat types, increasing the opportunity for wildlife observation. The trail also passes through an existing wildlife observation tower, where hikers and skiers can take a break. There is a warming shelter in the winter. The trail is well marked. The trail is located in the town of Strongs Prarie, off of Chicago Avenue.
SANDHILL WILDLIFE AREA TRUMPETER AUTO TRAIL
The Sandhill Wildlife Area is a remote, quiet wildlife oasis. Through this wild life area runs the Trumpeter Trail Auto tour, a 14-mile all weather road which provides a quiet glimpse into the area’s wildlife habitats. The trail is well marked with signs that provide visitors with information on the animals and their habitat. The trail is open from sunrise to sunset April through the end of October. Sandhill Wildlife Center also offers biking trails, birding, cross county skiing, hiking, hunting and trapping.
WISCONSIN RIVER TRAIL
Great River views and plenty of wildlife. The trail travels from downtown Wisconsin Rapids through Port Edwards and into Nekoosa. This is a 9.5 miles long trail that connects communities through a dedicated, paved, bike trail.
SONGBIRD TRAIL - SAND VALLEY
This trail will take you through a sampling of the restoration and remnant areas on-site as well as past golf landscapes and an intact red pine plantation! It is approximately 1.2 miles round trip. Located near Craig's Porch on Sand Valley's Golf Course, stop in the Clubhouse to ask for directions to the trail.
RIDGE TRAIL - SAND VALLEY
This advanced three mile trail traverses along the V ridge on the new Mammoth Dunes golf course. The trail features expansive sand blow outs, red pine plantation, and a majestic oak savanna. Hikers will enjoy golf course views of 14 of the 18 holes, including vistas on sand ridges as high as 80 feet above the course. This marked trail begins and ends at the Sand Valley Clubhouse.
Rome has over 40 miles of fire/dirt lanes that the public can use for recreational use of the silent sports.

Located north of Adams Friendship, the park has more than five miles of ground level hiking trails, camp sites, picnic areas, a picnic shelter for up to 80 people, playground, volleyball and horseshoe courts and fishing for pan fish or brook and brown trout in Carter Creek. This is a popular site for geocaching. The park is open year round from 6 am until 11 pm. The summer entrance is located on Highway 13, during the winter the park is accessible through the entrance on Czech Avenue.
AHDAWAGAM TRAIL SYSTEM
Located in Wisconsin Rapids, there is more than 20 miles of biking trails. The trail travels through wooded and urban areas, along the riverfront, and throughout the city streets. The trail consists of five distinct trails ranging from 3 to 7 miles in length.
SOUTH WOOD COUNTY PARK/TRAIL
Located in Wisconsin Rapids, the park surrounds Lake Wazeecha. There is a 4.1 mile walking and biking trail that goes all the way around the lake. The park has two beaches, Red Sands and White Sands. Shelter buildings, an enclosed stone shelter.
